I mean, the deal was turning him, not keeping him alive, right?
I guess we don't really know what the deal was! Very likely exactly as you say, giving LaCroix an "out" if he decides Constantine is troublesome. Though they're both very sly so maybe there was more to the deal.
It seems the vampire community has great use for Constantine's organization, but whether they need Constantine himself is hard to say. If Constantine clings to being the face of the organization, that will not work and would put the community at risk, but if he were to agree to install a puppet as the face while running the show behind the scenes, that could work.
when Janette first went to Lacroix, asking to turn Nick as a companion for her, Lacroix didn't seem that thrilled.
I actually don't remember this that well. I just remember Nick thinking he was going to get in on with Janette, but SURPRISE, here's some random guy. Won't you listen to what he has to say? Yes, yes, it's creepy and weird, but hear him out.
My theory is, that if Nick had been obedient and a "good lil' fledge", Lacroix might have lost interest.
I 100% agree with you. LaCroix doesn't keep a tight leash on other vampires he has made. He and Nick also were apart at times. LaCroix only really starts to dog Nick when Nick starts looking for a cure in earnest.
Though LaCroix enjoys Janette's companionship, he respects her periodic need for space in a way he doesn't with Nick, but he also doesn't have to "worry" about her. He even takes steps to dissuade Nick from seeking her out on those occasions when she does want space. She's earned it. Nick though? Gotta keep a close eye on him.
