I've watched more season 3 with my spouse but, but it's kind of dragging, so I said, "Let's just skip to more of the good stuff" 'cause I think the spouse is going to lose interest if we don't.

Cue "Night in Question," one of my personal favorites of this season.

So back in "Hearts of Darkness," we get introduced to the idea that at least part of vampirism is psychosomatic. If you don't know you're a vampire, you won't be one. Whoa. The implications are huge. And in "Night in Question," we see that play out in Nick's life.

In which I meander through this episode with a lot of thoughts and feelings. )

Several months ago, when I got on my nostalgic kick about FK, I discovered AO3 and started reading a bunch of fic over there (not only FK, but mostly FK). And then I was like, maybe I should write one.

So I did. And I was glad I did, or I wouldn't have found the little community over here or learned that FORKNI-L still exists (thanks, Greer Watson, for pointing these things out to me!!!)

Again, I am very glad I did, but nonetheless, it's been a hot minute since I wrote fic of any kind (like 15-ish years). So over the weekend, I decided to see if I could improve it with fresh eyes. It's still the same story with a few things re-arranged. I cut out a bunch that I found, in retrospect, a bit extraneous/distracting. But despite cutting a lot out, the revision ended up about 400 words longer than before. It turns out I like writing dialog a lot more than descriptions/imagery so I spent some time fleshing out the descriptive language. I think the story better now.

It is set immediately post-"Ashes to Ashes" with Natalie, Nick, and LaCroix.

"Ashes to Ashes" was a fave episode for me, but it had plot holes big enough to march a Roman legion through. (We'll talk about that stuff after my next viewing of the episode.) Two vampires die and Nick is just totally unscathed? Come on now. I don't think so.

Regarding AO3, I realize there are a lot of relationship categories, but I personally don't love boxing this one in with such labels. So I slapped on a tag to "read into it whatever you want," which I truly mean. Is it Gen, is it Nick/Nat, is it Nick/LaCroix? IDK, the reader gets to decide those things.

Here it is:
