I'm a lifelong Star Trek fan. Original Series, Next Gen, DS9, but I admit I never really could get totally into Voyager (though since I love Seven of Nine on Picard, I might go back and watch Voyager starting with when she shows up). Love the new Trek: Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds.

Then there's Enterprise... gosh, I wish it had been good. It just ultimately wasn't. I didn't make it through the whole series.

But I did write an Enterprise fan fiction back early in the show's run. In the early first season episode "Unexpected," the crew encounter a race of aliens known as the Xyrillians. I remember pretty much fuck all about the episode other than it brought us canon mpreg. Yeah, you heard that right. Canon mpreg. They went there.

The ship's human, male chief engineer, Trip Tucker, gets pregnant by one of the aliens (as I recall, the process was super bizarro too, like he and the alien put their hands in a box with crystals or something and that did it?? I don't entirely remember). Anyway, the whole problem is averted when they track down the Xyrillians again and somehow they fix it and it's not a problem. What a cop out. If a show is going to Go There, it should own it. Otherwise, why bother.

The premise of my story is what if the crew did not track down the Xyrillians again? What might have happened in this scenario if it couldn't be neatly solved and the problem avoided?
