Date: 2024-02-29 09:23 pm (UTC)I do believe that overall, they did a great job costuming this series. With all the flashbacks they needed to accommodate, they really did an amazing job. I also am impressed at our more knowledgeable colleagues who were able to place and date flashbacks by what the characters--largely Janette was wearing.
Of course, Janette wins Best Dressed hands down! We do just have to ignore Human Factor, and I don't think we can hold her responsible for the 50's housewife attire she is sporting in Curiouser and Curiouser--that's Nick's projection of what he thinks she wants, and what he hasn't been able to give her.
The flashback attire she wears, and manages to move in, is just amazing. I am partial to her dress in the fb of Partners of the Month. Very classy!
She also shows some range in present day. She keeps the cocktail attire mainly for the club, but tones it down a little bit when she is out and about, such as her rare visits to the precinct. I actually like her in a simple black sheath dress she wears in a few episodes. I remember it clearly from her meeting Natalie in Cherry Blossoms.
If we have to call the fashion police, I guess it would be on Nick, but he does have some interesting clothing choices. The whole lack of a tie thing is fascinating since most of his colleagues seem to be wearing one, but it's never mentioned. I do like his look with one in "False Witness" and in the fb of "Spin Doctor."
I think his best present-day season was the 1st. The leather jacket over a Tshirt/turtleneck/dress shirt worked very well. He seemed to change clothes a bit too often in Season 1, he often popped up in a different outfit although there was no reason for it--although I do think they needed to keep in in continuity with the stock flying footage. He also had more of an edgy feel to him in 1st season.
The 2nd season I can't begin to understand. Were the vests an attempt to disguise GWD increased girth? If so, it didn't work. He often looked a lot better in the fb than the current story. Perhaps they were meant to depict layers, either in his persona or an attempt to constrain him from the real world in some way. Again a fail.
3rd season was better, a little more in keeping with his 1st season clothing, but with a more mature feel to it with sportscoats over dress shirts. I did love the long black overcoat he wears through a lot of the season.
As for flashbacks, I'm partial to the white tie and tails look. Although the military uniforms are a good look as well. My favorite is the top hat, opera cape, and cane in Bad Blood. A little campy, but it works. My least favorite, hands down, was the white stay puff marshmallow outfit from his wedding to Alyssa in Night in Question. Yikes! That could not have been period correct, could it??
For Lacroix, the basic black works quite well, both in appearance and as representative of his character. I didn't love the platinum blonde buzzcut look--although I do agree that it made him look like Rutger Hauer and I do love RH! It did make him seem younger to me, if that makes sense, more like the brother Nick speaks of in DK, than the father figure he spends most of the series portraying. It also made him stand out a little too much for someone who wants to be as inconspicuous as possible. I was happy when they went to a more natural hair color in KI, and I'll bet Nigel's scalp was happy too!
I did love the little embellishments--the ever-present ring and the sword pin, neither of which we are ever told the significance of. As for other outfits, I do agree he looked great in the scrubs and the toga. He's got good arms. And he carries the military wear well also.
Natalie's clothing is generic. She wears scrubs when appropriate, business attire when needed and casual clothing when hanging out at the loft--at least in the first two seasons. I think it speaks to her level of comfort with Nick. We do see a lot less of it in the 3rd season, she often seems to be in a business suit when visiting Nick in the 3rd season. She is the everywoman counterpoint to Janette's peacock. Although both women seem to have similar wild, curly hair which they each keep in various levels of containment depending on the situation!
Of all the others, I think Tracy is the most interesting. She is a young, very attractive woman in a male dominated profession. And she has the added burden of being a nepo baby. She must have to put some thought into what she wears. We see her in everything from a tshirt, jeans and sneakers to a rather fashionable suit in "Strings". Mostly she seems to be dressed fairly androgynously with plenty of pants, pant suits, with the occasional long skirt thrown in.
Thanks for the topic!
