Challenge #9
Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works.

My tastes in tropes are so varied depending on the fandom. And making lists is pretty much impossible. I'll be here until August if i try.

But tier rankings? Apparently more doable for me.

The S-Tier Highest of High Godsend Tropes:
  • AMNESIA FIC... i've said it before, i'll say it again. its the perfect trope. the crème de la crème of tropes, nothing else compares. the drama and danger, the loss of identity and agency, the tabula rasa effect. is the memory loss accidental or inflicted? is their mind control or manipulation involved? is the character happier this way? is the character redeemable this way? how do relationships change or suffer?
  • SOULMATE AU... soulmates, soulmarks, soulbonds. with whatever known or unknown quantity is deciding Fate, i'm always thrilled with every possible human reaction to being slapped in the face with "wait... this guy? really universe?"
  • CANON DIVERGENCE... canon is always just a starting point to a bigger, grander adventure. any story that splinters off into new territory, new narrative, new destinies is just my absolute favorite thing. it is just THE TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS trope if you think about it. it boils down to, why yes kind copyright holder, i see what you did there, but don't mind me if i just take it as a suggestion...

Challenge #8:
Talk about your creative process.

This has been a bit of an off-putting challenge because there is a great deal about my creative process that I feel desperately out of touch with. The past two years my creative output has felt insurmountably stalled. (and part of me still hasn't interrogated one of the inciting personal/fandom incidents that made me even more self conscious as a writer) but I have recently been recommitting to writing fanfiction again, which has felt in a lot of ways like relearning an entire aspect of my personality.

Step One! The seed.
The initial part of the creative process generally starts with a seed idea. The seed is normally no bigger than a specific scenario/scene or bit of dialogue. The seed always needs to be jotted down immediately. If it doesn't happen, the idea is gone forever. But once in a document, if the seed is truly taking root then I will work forward and backwards to achieve this scene. And by achieve, I mean, make it make sense. for example: the best fic I ever wrote was Ouroboros, a 20k joe/nicky fic for The Old Guard. The seed scene for that fic was just one bit of dialogue where joe is asked by another character "why does nicky do anything?." and i wrote the entire story backwards and forwards like a pendulum to get to a place where it made sense for joe to respond with the emotional clincher of "because he loves me."

This is why I have a great deal of trouble talking about my in progress stories with people. Its hard to explain that I want to write my way up to a scene where Shane Hollander is breaking up with his shitty abusive boyfriend because his husband is coming home. But that's an image I definitely have been ruminating on for weeks XD.

Step Two! The document shuffle.
This part of the process is easy! Open several documents, title them poorly, and write the story in six different places at varying velocities and uncertain directions. Nothing will get lost this way. Nothing at all...

Step Three! Vibes.
Very much depends on the length and goals of the story. Longer stories get more cushion. A dedicated playlist or a pinterest board. For example, my 911 fic Retrograde has its own pinterest board i spent way too much time on. And another example, my ASOIAF fic A Song of Earth & Sky has a playlist. Never story is anywhere close to finished, but hey. No one said the process was efficient.

Step Four!
Self Hatred.
What it says on the tin. This is where I tell myself over and over that my stories are meaningless and I'm a hack. I will earnestly debate deleting everything I've ever written. (However, I am still learning and unlearning this process with the new added benefit of being fucking medicated. Maybe this will lead to hating myself less? who knows. a girl can dream.)

Step Five!
Set story to a low simmer and walk the fuck away.
This is the only counterbalance to step four. Generally a break of a few days or weeks (or even months to years) will make me enjoy what I've written again. It will inspire me to write more and perhaps add enough seasoning and polish to get to the posting stage.

And I was going to say that was all, but I was talking to [personal profile] queenslayerbee & just remembered that back in like 2019 during the lost days of quarantine, I came up with a short list of what i considered "rules" for my personal fic writing process.
So, I present to you CypressSunn's Thirteen Rotating Rules of Writing*
  1. All stories are promises.
  2. You don’t have to know where to begin but you must know how it ends.
  3. Reel in the exposition. Subtlety gets you everywhere.
  4. Immersion is sacred. From respecting the atmosphere to every last sensuous detail, setting is always a character in its own right.
  5. No well-written character should ever have to say “I love you” or “I hate this” to be understood. The unsaid is powerful, but the unconveyed is meaningless.
  6. Motivation matters. Even the most spontaneous act must spring from somewhere.
  7. Change is essential.
  8. Failure is never optional.
  9. Stories need consequences, but never authorial punishment.
  10. All stories must endorse a truth about character or humanity (but that truth does not need to be good, pure, or even kind).
  11. Trust in the intelligence of the audience.
  12. Let the story breathe. Come back to it in time.
  13. No writing is ever wasted.
* rules subject to change because i have free will and all that.

I don't think I posted about Amperslash when it revealed, but I got a lovely gift!

The Ties that Bind Us (Biggles, slightly ambiguous Biggles/EvS)
A very fun, sensual fic in which they are trying to squirm out of ropes tying them together, while also talking about Feelings.

And I got THREE gifts in Holiday Airdrop, the Biggles exchange I run! This time around, all are gen and Algy & EvS-focused.

Soft Landings, a wonderfully well realized, hurt/comforty AU in which Algy is the first person on the team to encounter Erich during Buries a Hatchet.

A Silver-Topped Cane is a lovely little post-Terai bit of comfort and bonding, in which Erich offers advice and maybe a little commiseration while Algy is healing.

Forge is deliciously iddy and visceral h/c in which EvS and Algy are handcuffed together in the desert.

Between the two exchanges, I wrote five fics, including some pairings I don't normally write! I'm looking forward to getting to 'fess up to them.

On Sunday, Jan 25, the first reveal (of the January collection, initial stories) will happen.

Writers, please make final touch ups to author notes, and be sure your story is ready.

There will be at least two "pinch hits" for the March round assignments - stories to remix that don't have a remixing participant yet. It's a good opportunity to join the event by getting an assignment without having to write and post a story first.

I'll have more details after matching, so in about a week.

Fly Boys and Pretty Birds

"So, do your own ears ring when you cut loose with that Cry of yours?" Hal asked with a rakish grin over the shared milkshake. He knew good and well that, despite her attempt to show off a maturity, she was all but jailbait for him.

He couldn't help himself, watching the way Dinah's lips wrapped around the straw, her eyes on him the whole while.

"Not unless it's amplified and directed back at me; found that out the hard way," she admitted. "I get white-noise effect, protecting me from it."

"Probably for the best; it's damned effective. The way you pushed Grundy — whoa, hey, what is it?"

"Reminded me too much of how I don't know the limits," she admitted, having lost her playful gamine look at the reminder. "It's not like I've had the ability to truly test it all that much in a controlled environment."

"How's a flight test range sound for setting that up?" Hal challenged. "We've got plenty of junk that you can demolish, I can get that kid Kord to come monitor with his doodads and spectra-whatevers?"

She lit back up, before giving him the most suspicious look he'd seen on her yet. "Hal, are you doing this to get something, or…"

"Scout's honor — yes I was one — that I want my teammate comfortable with her power." He then laughed a little. "The dates are completely separate from that. I like to earn a lady's graces the old-fashioned way."

She smiled at him. "Well, I do like the jacket, and you are rather handsome," she teased him. "Maybe my graces, as you put it, are within reach."

Hal smiled. "We'll just see how you feel after the movie." He had the feeling this friendship was going to last, even if that's all it was.

Summary:

While trapped in a different universe, Dinah falls for another older man

Shelter in Danger

When Dinah Lance found herself catapulted into another dimension, it wasn't all that shocking. She's been tossed through time, sent to other worlds, and even touched alternate versions of her own world. To wake up in a world that was completely unlike her own as far as people and problems went, but still an Earth wasn't that hard to come to terms with.

No, the thing that shocked her was finding an older white-haired man with a harder sense of justice than she usually took for herself that stirred her emotions so strongly. Similarities to another man of her own world may have set the stage for growing closer, but it was Erik's ability to debate with her, to see her as a capable fighter in her own right, and his old-fashioned manners that sealed her doom.

There was just something irresistible in a man that opened doors for her but didn't think she needed to be in the kitchen for Dinah Lance.

She'd given her word that she would help defend this small island refuge. She wanted no part of his retaliatory strikes, but the people who were just trying to live their lives were under her protection. As Erik — Magneto currently — was deflecting the heavy artillery back into the attackers, Black Canary was ably working defense against the ground assault with his other combatants.

She had no idea how many amphibious vehicles she grounded permanently, how many people in deep-water gear were shoved back off the beach, but eventually Magneto gathered up all of the remaining debris from the assault and threw it out to join the artificial reef off his coastline. While he did that, she acquired one of her protein-gels, slaking a need for energy and liquid at once before seeing if she needed to help with injured.

Magneto landed beside her moments later, his hand going to the small of her back. She wasn't thinking about the likely human cost of the assault; mutants were feared and hunted here, and that force had come with the intent to kill or enslave from all she had managed to dig up.

"Your voice, my dear, is devastating. And yet you espouse more peaceful notions than I," he said with grim satisfaction over the results she'd gotten.

"I learned to modulate it over the years, so I get the effect I want," she said, shifting just slightly closer, her voice dipping into flirting tones.

"Hmm, and what effect do you wish now?" he asked, matching her tone, as that strong hand on her lower back shifted more to her hip and upper ass.

"The ability to be somewhere private and less clothed, of course," she told him.

He laughed, deep and throaty. "Oh, I like that direct approach." He guided her toward his own room, leaving the aftermath to his lieutenants. Dinah was more than happy with that choice, hoping if she distracted him long enough, he'd choose some other way than direct assault on the attacking nation.

8 for good luck

“Oh, right, I forgot what a law-abiding citizen you were,“ John begins, “You can do whatever you want because you’re a fucking anarchist—“

“but god forbid I should ever—“ the argument clicking along down the old familiar track—except Matt laughs.

Couldn't they possibly have, perhaps and please, cast actors who don't look so goddamn alike for Steve & Bucky, I'm sorry, I mean Scott & Kip?

If they shave or the other one of them gets slightly more facial hair, I've not even the slightest hope here. In the sex scenes, it's like whatever, if you wanted me to know who is who, you'd light it better.

Put a shirt on. Why do you have identical torsos, one of you is a professional athlete and the other one works two jobs.

Book review: A Memory Called Empire

Title: A Memory Called Empire (Teixcalaan #1)
Author: Arkady Martine
Narrator: Amy Landon
Genre: Fantasy/Sci-fi, fiction

I realized as I was approaching the end of this book that it is the third unfinished series sapphic SFF centering the machinations of an empire that I've read lately (the others being The Locked Tomb and The Masquerade). A Memory Called Empire is the first book in the Teixcalaan series by Arkady Martine (narrated by Amy Landon in the audiobook) and tells the story of Mahit Dzmare, a diplomat from an as-yet-unconquered satellite state of the Teixcalaanli Empire entering her role as ambassador for the first time--after the previous ambassador went radio silent.

For fans of fantasy politics, I highly recommend this one. Mahit enters a political scene on the cusp of boiling over and is thrown not only into navigating a culture and society she's only ever read about, but having to piece together what her predecessor was doing, why he was doing it, and what happened to him. It's a whirlwind of not knowing who to trust, what to lean on, or where to go.

Martine creates such an interesting world here in Teixcalaan and the mindset of a people who pride themselves on being artists above all and yet exist as ruthless conquerors within their corner of space. Furthermore, Mahit herself is in a fascinating position as someone who's been half in love with this empire since childhood, and yet is all too keenly aware of the threat it poses to her and her home. Mahit does well in Teixcalaan--she loves the poetry and literature they so highly prize, she's able to navigate Teixcalaanli society and see the double meanings everywhere, and she's excited to try her hand at these things. And yet--if she plays her cards wrong, it will end with her home being gobbled up by Empire, and as Mahit herself says: Nothing touched by Empire remains unchanged.

I really enjoyed her characters too--3-Seagrass stole the show for me--and they all have believably varied and grounded views and opinions, with the sorts of blind spots and biases you would expect from people in their respective positions. There's character growth and change too, which is always fun to see, and I'm excited to see how that progresses in the next book.

If I had a complaint, and it's a minor one, it's that the prose is sometimes overly repetitive and explanatory, as if Martine doesn't quite trust her audience to remember things from earlier in the book, or understand what's being implied, which occasionally has the effect of making Mahit look less intelligent than her role would demand. However, it didn't happen often enough that I was truly annoyed, and I think the book gets better about it as it goes on.

On the whole, a fun, exciting read (although it takes its time to set up--expect a slow start!) that left me actually looking forward to my commute for a chance to listen to more. Already checking to see if my library has the next book available.
