  • All The Rest Is Silence by Dorothy Elggren

This is a poignant story told from the perspectives of those left behind to sort through the wreckage left in the aftermath of "Last Knight."

The author is upfront that this story isn't going to solve or fix anything, which is true. But the story does deftly answer the question of what the days that followed "Last Knight" might have looked like for those who had to live it. It's not a pretty picture, but a very real one.

The story is told mainly from the point of view of Captain Reese, but other characters also appear along the way including another coroner, Grace, and Commissioner Vetter. In a strange way, Nick and Nat also feel somehow present even when the story is largely about their disappearance. As those left behind sort through the pieces of Nick's and Nat's lives, those pieces create a bizarre and incomplete picture that leads only to more questions.

There is also a fascinating perspective of not only the people, but also the places left behind, almost like those places are characters too: Nick's loft, Nat's apartment, the Raven, and Nick's and Tracy's desks at the police station. They are defined by who isn't there.

This is a kind of case fic, but one in which the case will never be solved. Each question the evidence raises is only answered by silence.

It's a story that leaves you a little hollow after reading it, the same kind of feeling you might have had after watching "Last Knight." And yet it's still a satisfying story to read because that night had consequences that we know must have existed, but never saw. This is what those consequences may have looked like.

One of my favorite stories and series of stories in the FK fanfic world. Dorothy did an amazing job giving us such a compelling story particularly in the absence of most of the main characters. The detail she utilizes and the way she connects canon is just wonderful.

I was in awe the first time I read the series and it is one I still go back to. For fans of LaCroix, the third in the series, Out of the Silence is well worth the read.

There are two more stories, Silent Echoes and Out of the Silence. Both are excellent. Out of the Silence is more powerful, but it will make more sense if you read the second one as well.
