I encourage self-promotion here (and any other recs). There are thousands of FK stories between AO3 and the old school fkfanfic archive. So I'll take whatever self-promos and recs I can get. I may not read them all (okay, I probably will eventually, lol), but it's welcome.

Thank goodness

calliope24 saw how very disappointed I was that Liam O'Neal never made another appearance on FK after “Bad Blood" and pointed me to her excellent fic, "Unfinished Business," in which O'Neal returns. It's a post-"Last Knight" story (I will never tire of post-LK stories and LK fix-its). And it's case fic. Be still my heart!

This story presents as part 4 of a series, but you don't need to read parts 1-3 to follow along. (I know because I didn't read them; just leapt right into this one to scratch that Liam O'Neal itch.)

The basic setup is Nick and Nat are trying to Make It Work, but there is major trauma for both of them following the events of LK. Meanwhile, Nick and Tracy investigate a series of murders that point to a vampire culprit. Who could it be? And who better to show up to ratchet up the tension than a certain charming and ruthless Irish detective-cum-vampire hunter? Tracy has her own worries to work through as the investigation unfolds. Needless to say, there's a lot of (yeah, I'm going to say it) unfinished business to resolve.

There is also a wonderful scene between Nick and LaCroix that captures where they are relationship-wise at this moment in time. Character voices are pitch-perfect in this story. I could really “hear” them. Events are harrowing and ultimately very satisfying.

There is some sexually explicit activity between Nick and Nat. I note this in case more mature sexual content is not your jam, but it is really well done here. (And maybe this is weird to say, but some of it plays out terribly in the best possible way. Like exactly how sex is going to go when you mix together trauma, exhaustion, and desire).
