It’s weird the things you remember and the things that you don’t after 20+ years.
There have been whole episodes of FK that I barely remember and yet there is fan fiction of yore that stuck with me. Not much that stuck with me, but some. (This is a comment on my brain/memory, not a judgement about the stories I read. I’m sure there is plenty of great stuff I read that is now a blank for me.)
greerwatson has reconstructed the original FK fan fiction archive. It was the main place to find the fan fiction back in the day. There are thousands of stories. I get that the archive isn't easily sorted and lacks descriptions. Nonetheless, it is a treasure trove.
There was a particular story that I remembered enjoying that focused on Schanke and LaCroix. Yes, you heard that right. Featuring these two as the main characters in a story was a whole thing for a while back in the 90s.
I recalled a part of the title and that was enough for me to track it down. I re-read it, thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it.
Quiet, Cold Heart by Bonnie Rutledge
Set between seasons 2 and 3, the set-up is that an obsessed fan of the Nightcrawler starts murdering people to get his attention. LaCroix being LaCroix, it doesn't particularly bother him. But the police being the police, it definitely bothers them.
Nick is out of town and Schanke heads the investigation. This leads to a number of excellent interactions between Schanke and LaCroix as the police try to catch the killer and prevent LaCroix from becoming the next victim.
If, after you saw the exchange between Schanke and LaCroix in the episode "Close Call," you thought, "Damn, I could really go for more dialog like that," then this story, my friend, will fulfill that desire. Both characters ring true here, which makes the story very satisfying and fun to read. As a bonus, there are also nice scenes of Schanke mentoring Tracy.
It was fun to unearth this one. I hope to make more recs in the future from the old archive as well as AO3 (the "new" stuff for me lol, even though stories there go back many years).
